Who the hell is Detective Morgue?
Well, this story starts with me. My name is Bastien Gonzalez, and I am a Melbourne-based digital Illustrator with a mild addiction to TV shows, a fondness for horror movies, skateboarding, metal music, and t-shirt graphics.
Even though I have been drawing since he was a kid, I did my first digital illustration in 2011. I had left France that same year to travel to and around Australia, and carrying art supplies with me wasn’t an easy task, so I decided to try digitizing the process.
I then picked up a few gigs here and there, illustrating t-shirts and posters for music bands, but it was in 2015 that I decided to start my own clothing line. In 2016, I released my brand’s first collection under the name of Morgue Apparel. It was initially going to be designs of things that I loved, such as skulls and weird creatures with neon-bright colours but, as time went on, the idea evolved. I wanted to create something more than just t-shirts.
This more immersive experience involved storytelling and would be part of a bigger universe, and that’s where Detective Morgue and his Bureau of Supernatural and Paranormal Investigations was born.
